PROTECTING
OUR DEMOCRACY

THE PROBLEM

In 2016, Russia attacked the very foundation of the United States: our democracy. They spread fake news via social media disinformation campaigns and sought to divide America. Every indication is that Russia and other potentially hostile foreign powers such as China and Iran will again attempt to undermine our electoral process in 2020.

Our democracy faces domestic threats as well, not the least of which is the corrupting influence of big money. The Citizens United Supreme Court case helped turn a deluge of campaign contributions into a flood, so that today we have billions of dollars in dark money being used to determine who wins and who loses. Much of this money is untraceable: we have no idea whose interests it represents. And the money with known origins props up a political system of the wealthy, by the wealthy and for the wealthy.

Perhaps the greatest threat to our democracy is partisan gerrymandering, the process by which politicians pick their voters instead of voters picking their politicians. Gerrymandering has created countless uncompetitive state legislative and congressional districts in which only one political party has a realistic chance of winning. Elections in these districts are functionally decided during the primary, which means candidates for office stake out positions at the extreme ends of the political spectrum, knowing that they won’t have to appeal to the middle during the general election.

American democracy rests on a foundation of free and fair elections, free of foreign interference, uncorrupted by monied special interests, and competitive to offer voters a true choice. Fixing these problems will lay the groundwork for solving many of the other issues facing America today.

WHAT WE CAN DO

To eliminate the impact of hostile foreign powers on our democracy, we must start by educating voters about the harm they did in 2016, and the ongoing threat they represent to our democracy and holding elected officials accountable who fail to take action on ensuring it never happens again.

We’re taking the fight to corruption in politics too. With your help, we can make sure voters know which candidates will work to reduce or eliminate the influence of big money in our electoral process. We’re holding candidates accountable and revealing who’s backing them and which big money special interests are puppeteering their campaigns.

The amount of misinformation will only escalate as we head into 2020. It’s more important now than ever that we cultivate a more informed community so that educated voters can be supporting candidates and policies that better the nation. That we are campaigning behind ending gerrymandering, eliminating voter suppression tactics, ending Citizens United and calling out “fake news” when we see it.

We support all of these policies to strengthen our democracy, because, without a strong foundation, our way of life will collapse. The United States Constitution makes it clear that all U.S. citizens have the inalienable right to vote, and when we’re well informed we make far better decisions for our country. The health of our democracy is at stake, and with your support, we’ll make sure more Americans have a say in our future.

ELECTIONS

RUSSIA'S ELECTION INTERFERENCE

Robert Mueller’s long-awaited report is unambiguously clear on this point: Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election and sought to help Donald Trump win the White House. [1]

CITIZENS UNITED

SPECIAL INTERESTS BUYING CANDIDATES

The Supreme Courts decision on Citizens United opened the floodgates for billionaires and special interests to spend unlimited amounts of money influencing our elections and backing candidates. [2]

SUPPRESSION

VOTER SUPPRESSION IMPACT IS REAL

In the 2016 election, through various undermining voter suppression efforts an estimated 16 million U.S. citizens were impacted: 12 percent of all voters. [3]

GERRYMANDERING

RIGGING DISTRICTS TO WIN SEATS

Rigged maps tend to be most prevalent, and most tilted, in states under Republican control. The GOP poured money into state legislative races with the specific aim of gaining control over redistricting. [4]
